"CEBU CITY: THE OLDEST CITY IN THE PHILIPPINES"

"Travelling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a story teller" - IBN BATTUTA

Cebu City is recognized as the oldest Spanish-established city in the Philippines and the site of the first Spanish settlement and colonial capital (Ppiquero, 2025). Cebu City is a place which defines tranquility, modernization, and rich history. The moment I stepped my foot in Cebu I couldn't resist my excitement as I am being overwhelmed by the cultural heritage sites. In this blog post, I am sharing to you my memorable experiences in Cebu City, Philippines.

Our course gave us opportunity to travel around the famous cities in the Philippines. Cebu City was one of my dream destination and it has declared by our instructor that Cebu will be one of our destination in the said tour. After I hear the news I can't explain the happiness I felt. To make story short, now I stepped in Cebu.

The weather is clear, the surroundings are beautiful, the views are great, and rich in history. Cebu is truly the "Queen City of the South".

Why Cebu?
Cebu is rich in history. As one of the oldest city in the Philippines. I only traveled some of their historical site such as with Magellan's Cross and Santo Niño Basilica

According to Cct (2024), Basilica Minore Del Sto. Nino is the oldest Roman Catholic church established in the Philippines. It was built on the same spot where the image of the Sto. Nino de Cebu, a statue depicting the Child Jesus, was found in 1565 by Spanish explorers led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

The Magellan's Cross is one of the famous destination in Cebu City, offering a unique experience while making you aware about the history behind it. "Magellan’s Cross is a significant symbol of Christianity’s introduction to the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. This landmark represents the birth of the Roman Catholic faith in Cebu and the archipelago. The wooden Cross is encased in Tindall wood and is located in a small chapel in downtown Cebu" (Gaspar, 2024).

How to access Cebu destinations?

If you're from Mindanao like me, all you need to do is to travel through either water or air transportation but in my case we traveled Cebu through water based transportation. We also used dedicated buses for our tour in order for us to follow our itinerary and to avoid delays in our journey. However, for some reasons, the destinations mentioned above are accessible through land transportation as long as it is sufficient as possible. Some destinations are free, but some destinations are fee based destinations. Lastly, Cebu is truly as worthy as what you expect.
